Learning Objectives

This session will:

  • Review the evolution of the approach to febrile young infants presenting to the emergency department with a focus on the 2021 American Academy of Pediatrics Guideline update.
  • Highlight Canadian challenges and solutions to implementing recent evidence-based guideline changes.
  • Discuss the impact of point-of-care viral testing and immunization status on the approach to fever in young infants.

Presenter Bio

Garth Meckler, MD, MSH
Head, Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine
Clinical Associate Professor
Department of Pediatrics, UBC

Garth is a pediatric emergency physician at BC Children’s Hospital, and a health services and clinical researcher with appointments in the Departments of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at UBC and a member of the BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute. His personal research interests include health services, pediatric out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and prehospital care, and pediatric migraine, though he has also collaborated on research related to the management of the febrile young infant which he will be speaking with you about today.
