ECBC had a successful Quality Forum 2025 conference, hosting a workshop and presenting a poster.

Thank you to everyone who joined our Quality Forum 2025 workshop to consider the question: What’s the Problem with Mid-Sized EDs? led by Drs. Todd Ring and Natasha DeSousa. With the use of a Liberating Structure tool called Discovery and Action Dialogue, participants discussed modifiable factors in mid-sized rural EDs that could impact their ability to maintain high-quality care and stop diversions. Our team is poring over the amazing ideas generated and look forward to sharing more updates at a later date.

Dr. Adam Watchorn (IH), Jason Curran (IH/RCCbc), Dr. Aron Zuidhof (IH), Elizabeth Stacy (ECBC), and Jessie Chai (Student, UBC Medical Program) were also pleased to share a poster on patient-controlled analgesia (PCA). This initiative was originally developed by Dr. Adam Watchorn as a way to improve pain control for patients requiring hospital transfers.

Recognizing PCA’s value for patients and paramedics across BC, the team shared details of the journey from this single-site tool used in Golden’s ED through collaboration with BC EHS. For the future, opioid administration is part of the planned paramedic scope expansion.

Read more about PCA here.
