The emergency department (ED) is often the first point of contact for young people across BC experiencing intense mental health or substance use distress. It’s a high-pressure, high-stakes environment—and for youth, it can feel overwhelming and intimidating. Yet, once discharged, many young people leave unsure where to go next. Some are pointed toward services with long waitlists or high costs, making support feel even more out of reach. This is where Foundry can help – we’re working to ensure ED staff across the province are equipped to connect youth with free, accessible wellness resources.
Our data shows that youth report that one of the most common ways they learn about Foundry is from healthcare professionals. This highlights the key role that you as a healthcare professional play in connecting young people aged 12-24 to our services.
To help ED care providers who are under immense pressure and sometime have little time for detailed discharge planning, Foundry has developed discreet print materials specifically for emergency departments and healthcare settings. These resources are easy to hand out for youth to review later, offering a confidential, approachable way to learn about Foundry.
We’re listening to feedback from healthcare professionals and are committed to ensuring no youth leaves the ED feeling alone. By equipping ED staff with the right tools, we’re creating stronger pathways to care—and helping youth across BC take their next steps toward wellness.
