ECBC is proud to recognize the outstanding work of Registered Nurses Gabby Geertsma, Cherrie Maritsas, Rachel Henri, and Social Worker Bryce Kaiser in enhancing intimate partner violence (IPV) screening in healthcare settings. As experienced ER nurses and a dedicated social worker at the University Hospital of Northern British Columbia (UHNBC), they have witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by patients experiencing IPV and identified the need for a more accessible, discreet screening approach.

Gabby Geertsma led this initiative by attending an Interagency Case Assessment Team meeting, where she connected with experts to explore existing screening tools. In collaboration with her colleagues, she partnered with the Canadian Women’s Foundation to adapt the Signal for Help for healthcare environments. This simple yet powerful tool was chosen for its discretion and ease of implementation. Gabby also played a key role in developing inclusive, user-friendly signage tailored to diverse patient populations.

Already, two hospital departments at UHNBC have adopted the signage, with more awaiting approval. The team has also reached out to community physicians to encourage adoption in their practices. Looking ahead, Gabby has applied to attend the International Council of Nurses Conference in June to explore global strategies for IPV screening.

If you are interested in learning more or looking to adopt this initiative in your health authority, please reach out to Gabrielle Geertsma.
