Child Health BC and BC Children’s Hospital have launched the Provincial Child and Youth Substance Intoxication and Withdrawal Guideline for Acute Care Settings—a crucial resource aimed at strengthening care for young patients who use substances. This guideline, along with accompanying tools, provides standardized, developmentally appropriate, and culturally safe care recommendations.
Key updates include:
✅ Substance-specific assessment and treatment recommendations
✅ A stronger focus on anti-racism, Indigenous rights, and cultural safety
Given the concerning increase in illicit drug toxicity as a leading cause of death among BC youth aged 10–18, this initiative ensures healthcare providers are equipped with best practices.
Additional resources, including a guide to street drug names and urine drug test interpretation, are now available.
